• Any land-based trail, non-motorized and motorized, can be nominated.
• The trail must be open to the public.
• If the nominating entity is not the trail management organization, nominators are encouraged to work with the trail management organization to submit a nomination and to avoid multiple nominations for the same trail.
• A letter of support is required from the trail management organization if the nominating entity is not the trail management organization. If your trail is selected as the trail of the year, the trail management organization will be the recipient of the award.

The narrative questions in this form are meant to be completed by the trail management organization. If you are an individual applicant, please:

• Have the following questions answered by the trail management organization overseeing the trail being nominated: narrativequestions.pdf
• If you do not have the contact information of the Trail Management Organization that oversees the trail you would like to nominate, please visit WeConservePA.org and find them using WeConservePA’s expansive list of trail groups.

Grant Spending Options (please address one or more):

• The development of trail safety education programs or trail-related environmental education programs for trail managers, volunteers, or trail users. (Note: Expenses related to volunteer workdays would not be considered eligible as workdays are not considered ‘training’)
• The development of training designed to improve trail accessibility and sustainability for trail managers or volunteers.
• The development of training on planning, design, construction, and maintenance of trails for trail managers and volunteers.
• The production of trail-related educational materials including (but not limited to) kiosks, interpretive signs, and other safety-related signage. (Note: The design and production of trail maps would be a partially eligible expense only if the maps also contain information on trail safety and/or environmental protection.)

• Letters of Support – 5–10 letters are recommended from various sources, such as:
  • Trail users
  • Volunteers and/or general supporters
  • County and municipal officials
  • Non-profit and conservation organizations
  • Local business owners
  If the nominator is not associated with the trail management organization, a letter of support will be required from the trail management organization.
• At least three (3) digital, color photographs.
• A detailed, color trail map.
